HISTORY OF THE PLACE

Ethamukkala was known as Enthi Mukkala in the past. There is an interesting story behind this name. Lord Rama was sent to forest by King Dasaratha at the behest of one of his consorts Kaikeyi. Rama was accompanied by Lakshmana and while they were serving the sentence in Dandakaranya, Surpanakha a lady demon sister of Ravana fell for the looks of these two young men.

Upon her approach Rama and Lakshmana spurned her advances. She wouldn’t listen and started throwing tantrums upon which furious Lakshmana cut her nose and ears. Thus the name ‘inthi Mukkala’ (‘inthi’ woman and ‘mukkala’ parts) came for this place. As time would have it, the name has been transformed to ‘Ethamukkala’ and was supported with that name as the place was later grown with Eetha trees (kind of Palm trees), and thus known now as ‘Ethamukkala’.This place is one k.m near to Bay of Bengal, 16 k.m. from Ongole, prakasam disrtict headquarters, Kottapatnam Mandalam, Andhra Pradesh in India.
